Can no more use MLD
« on: April 06, 2020, 00:31:31 »
Good morning , and thanks for your very good jobs.
Sorry for my bad english , and i don't speak German.

Yesterday , i made system update on my working 5.4 testing MLD , but when i reboot , after first MLD logo , screen become black and system hang.
No services are started ( web , smb , ecc ), no ping response , no ctrl+alt+Fn , but only black screen.

Then i've tried to make clean install , but iso won't boot and i have same problem (black screen after first MLD logo)

I suppose something was changed in the boot process.

I  have tried to boot 'verbose mode' , but same results ( black screen after I hit 'enter' ).

My system is non so young , but was working fine before yesterday. I don't have UEFI , but legacy Bios with ahci mode.

Is there something i can do to work it again ?

I like MLD, and I would regret not being able to use it anymore.

Thanks

Ivo

Hello,
Welcome to the forum  :)

Instead of verbose, Did you try snapshots?
If it works then you can restore an older snapshot.

Hi,

Linux is not windows and a fresh install usually not necessary!  ;)

As gr4vity suggested, make a rollback by the snapshots. This should bring the system up again. Then you can try to update again.
Watch the output attentively and let us know, if have you seen any error messages during the update-process.

Hi ,

yes i have tried snapshoot too , but result is the same.
After I hit 'enter' , black screen , an no more fun.

I have tried installation from an old iso, i can boot and install , but when i restart i have problem again. I don't know if this iso is upgrading packages during installation.

This one is the iso that boot and can install :  "MLD-5.4_netinstall_2019.11.29-180.6+1545_amd64.iso"

No other error message are displayed.

Newer iso's  boot and hang on black screen.

My system : MB P7P55-M - core I5 - Ram $GB - 64 bit version.

If you take a unstable Image, you have the extra option "debug" on the boot manager. Please try this.

All image do an update on installation.

Thanks for help i solve my problem , i think i have a quite incredible hardware issues.

I have four 2GB RAM modules.

If I use three modules ( 6GB total ) , system boot without any problem.
If I add fourth modules system wont boot.

I think is time to change my hardware.

What is the best configuration for 4K playback ?
 PC , raspberry , banana ... ?

At the moment that's only possible with a PC. In future it will also possible with a RPI-4. But at the moment the RPI-4 is not already useable.
If you use a PC, it's also important to take the right grafik card.

I had the exact same issue once and it was also faulty RAM or in fact incompatible RAM to the mainboard. Memtest86+ ran error free for 24 hours but still the RAM caused the trouble on that mainboard. Why don't you just keep your hardware, the 6 GB RAM you have left are more than enough for VDR and Kodi. In fact you could take out one more module to save energy and re-enable the dual channel mode which I guess will be currently disabled having 3 modules installed.

Hi, i have also the issue, i have an old 5.4 testing and i upated this towday to 5.4 stable, but only MLD-HD logo i can see, but VDR is running, over VDRzapper i can connect from Win10.
But the OSD and/or local play don't work. I find that strange, bevore it works fine, and after snapshot also. So i can't think that hardware is damaged.

Du hast aber schon gelesen, das es bei Ihm ein Hardware Problem war, ein RAM Modul war defekt,
oder vieleicht auch ein Problem vom Mainboard.

Bei dir ist es eine Software Gesichte.
